Culture Norms: When meeting and parting, hands are always shaken; this applies throughout the country in both rural and urban areas. It is the convention to use the right hand, not the left, to shake hands or pass or receive anything. The standard greeting of 'hello' is jambo. Dress is on the whole casual but a smart appearance for formal occasions such as a business meeting or upmarket restaurant is always appreciated. The coast is a little more conservative, and away from the beach it is advised to dress respectably and cover up arms and legs. English and Swahili are the official languages.

Vaccinations: Malaria: Â Prophylaxis with Lariam, Malarone, or doxycycline is recommended for all areas at altitudes less than 1800 m. Hepatitis A & B, Influenza and Typhoid, vaccinations are recommended for all travelers. Yellow fever, recommended only for those at risk for a large number of mosquito bites. Required for travelers arriving from a yellow-fever-infected country in Africa or the Americas. Two doses of MMR vaccinations are recommended for travelers born after 1956 if not previously taken.
