After checking in to your hotel, you will go on a guided sightseeing tour of the city center, including a visit to the Alexander Nevski Cathedral - one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in Europe. Then you will see The Church of St George, St. Sophia Church as well as the former Royal Palace, today housing the National Art Gallery and the Ethnographic Museum. Afterwards, you could go on an optional visit to the National History Museum and the medieval Boyana Church in Sofia. In the evening, you could relax and unwind or go on an optional tour of “Sofia by night,” including a delicious dinner at a traditional restaurant accompanied with folkloric music and traditional dance.

You could also go on an optional full-day tour to the ancient town of Philippopolis, possibly one of the oldest cities in the world. Known today as Plovdiv, this town was inhabited by the Thracians, Romans, Goths, Slavs and Ottomans whose traces have turned it into a museum. Also worth mentioning is the charming Old Town where you will find brilliant examples of the Bulgarian National Revival period, which was sometimes called the “Bulgarian Renaissance.”

This morning, you will have some time at leisure. You could take a one-day optional tour to the fascinating Rila Monastery, considered the most exquisite example of monastery art and architecture in Bulgaria. The impressive 10th C Rila Monastery is the largest and most prominent Eastern Orthodox monastery in the country. Marvel at the miraculous icon of the Virgin and splendid gilded iconostasis, the Monastery kitchen and the Rila Monastery Museum which keeping the long history of the monastery. Here you will also see the beautiful wood-carved cross by a monk called Rafael, the Hrelyu’s Tower and spectacular views from the mountain.
