Reykjavík – Hella
After an early breakfast at your hotel, you will meet your guide at 09:00 to start the day’s itinerary. Starting with a city tour of Reykjavík, you will head to the Reykjanes peninsula, with its hot springs, mountains, bird cliffs, lighthouses and fishing villages. At the end of the day, you will be able to soak away your fatigue in the warm blue waters of the famous Blue Lagoon before heading to the cottage for check-in.
In the evening, you will relax in the garden to see if the Northern Lights are visible. Also, known as the Aurora Borealis, these spectacular sky-light shows can frequently be seen in Iceland from September through April on clear and crisp nights; however, sightings are not guaranteed.
Overnight in Hella (Breakfast).
This morning you will travel along the South Coast and stop near the active volcano beneath the Eyjafjallajökull glacier. Next, you will stop at the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where you can take a trail that goes behind the falling water – if you’re ready to get wet! Then you will head east to visit one of Iceland’s finest folk museums which contains an outstanding collection of farm and domestic artifacts. You will then continue to the seaside and take a stroll on the black lava beach to see the amazing cliffs at Reynisfjara.
In the evening you will take a bus tour to celebrate the New Year the Icelandic way; you will visit the bonfires in Hvolsvöllur and Hella. The Icelandic Brenna bonfires on New Year’s Eve originated in the Middle Ages when people burned the old things they no longer needed. After the bonfire excitement, your 4-course dinner on the river banks of Hella begins! At 23:30, a local rescue team member will join your group to light fireworks. At midnight the magic begins, as people light up the sky with thousands of fireworks all around the country, giving you a show to remember. After the firework display, if the sky is clear enough, you may get another chance to see the Northern Lights – what better way to start the New Year!
